Acura Hosts Exclusive Launch Event At American Honda Private Collection
February 25, 2013
Optum Pro Cycling presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies’ 2013 season got into high gear this month with a special team launch at the private American Honda Museum in Torrance, Ca. The event saw vehicle sponsor Acura host Optum p/b KBS’ men’s and women’s teams and a collection of the team’s 2013 partners. The event capped off more than ten days of aggressive, preparatory training throughout the Oxnard/Ventura and Santa Monica Canyons, ending in Torrance, Ca.
Optum p/b KBS charged into the new year with their annual training camp hosted in Oxnard, CA. The camp consisted of 10 days of training throughout the mountains of Ventura County. Team riders old and new got a feel for the new dynamic during the duration of camp – capped off with the team hosting two rides, first down to Torrance, CA and then around the Los Angeles area before culminating in the team launch event, with partner Acura, at the American Honda Private Collection on the 15th.
“Acura is excited to continue its partnership with Optum p/b KBS and help kick off their 2013 race season for the men’s and women’s teams,” said Gary Robinson, Acura advertising and brand manager. “We love seeing our vehicles supporting team Optum’s cycling activities and know that many of our own clients use their Acura vehicles to maintain their own active lifestyles.”
Guests got the opportunity to meet with the full men’s and women’s team lineup, team management and performance staff as well as explore team vehicles and discuss race strategy in a detailed Q+A with the team. Stand out athletes from the men’s and women’s teams include Canadian National Champion and 2012 London Olympian, Denise Ramsden; Jade Wilcoxson ranked third overall in the U.S.; fellow Olympian Mike Friedman; Alex Candelario who, last season, snatched top five placements in each of the three major U.S. races, and Ken Hanson, winner of the most titles in professional U.S. cycling in 2012.
“2013 is going to be a phenomenal season for our team,” said Performance Director Jonas Carney. “We’ve got Olympians, national champions, winners of major NRC races and overseas Tours – plus amazing support from partners like Acura, which provides us with one of the quickest cars in the peloton. We’ve had a fantastic week training along the Pacific Coast Highway and in the Santa Monica Canyon. It’s some of the best terrain in the United States for putting athletes and team vehicles through their paces.”
For the 2013 race season, Acura is providing the team with the Acura TSX Sport Wagon and the all-new 2013 Acura RDX. Both vehicles are wrapped in team colors and will travel with men’s and women’s teams to all domestic races and team events across the country. The wrapped vehicles were on display at the museum along with a collection of classic Acura and Honda vehicles from the 1970s through the present day – many of the cars were purchased by former Executive Vice President Tom Elliott, and comprise one of the most extensive collection of Honda products in the world. The collection features cars like the N600, the first car Honda offered within the US, and the Acura NSX, one of the fiercest sports car ever produced by Honda. It is a one-of-a-kind collection offering a look into the rich history Honda has within the US.
